The California Channel Island lies in the Ventura County of the state of California, USA. The island covers an area of 1 square kilometres, approximately 0.45 square miles.
According to the United States Census Bureau of statistics, the channel island had a population of 3,142 people in 2000. The big percentage of the population is composed of whites who make up 39% followed by Asians at 1.91% and African Americans at 1.11%. The remainder of the population is composed of Native Americans and Pacific Islanders.
The Channel Islands have a rich history of being the first place in America from where seafaring was conducted. The Islands host a number of archaeological sites that provide evidence of earlier times human activity in relation to marine ecosystems. The Channel Island National Park consists of over 2,000 animal and plant species. The national park's first conservation effort was made in 1938 when it was designated as a US National Monument. The park was later upgraded to a Biosphere Reserve in 1976 and eventually as a national park in 1980. The animal and plant species found in the Island's are very unique, as they cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The Island waters and land mass are home to the smallest of marine life, the plankton and the largest animal to ever to live on earth, the blue whale.
The uniqueness of animal and plant species found in the Islands attract thousands of visitors annually, with the park's mainland centre alone receiving over 300,000 visitors annually. Visitors who specifically visit the Islands waters exceed 60,000 annually. The main attraction in the Island waters occurs in the winter and spring periods when grey whales migrate, exhibiting spectacular displays. However, the perfect time to visit the park is in the autumn when the weather is splendid with nice sunshine and less wind.
